Squat will also increase if there are two or more vessels passing one
another, side by side. A vessel will normally travel near the side of a channel when it is
passing alongside another vessel. In this case, the effective cross-sectional area of the
channel will be reduced by the cross-sectional area of the vessel being passed. The
total squat for a vessel can be approximated by first calculating the centerline squat
with the reduced effective cross-sectional area of the channel. To this centerline squat
is added the additional squat resulting from the vessel being off the centerline of the
channel.
