MIL-HDBK-1005/6
CHAPTER 2.
WIDE GAGE PORTAL CRANE TRACKAGE
Section 1:
CRITERIA AND TYPES
Scope. This chapter presents design criteria and standards for
1.1
trackage for different types of wide gage portal cranes. Particular reference
is made to rails, rail supports, turnouts, crossings, alignment, components,
curves of all types, and design procedures. The criteria herein cover design
of both new trackage and rehabilitation alignments. NAVFACENGCOM Headquarters
has a computer program TRACKS, Application Manual for Portal Crane Track
Design, available for new track design analysis and rehabilitation design and
analysis.
Additional Criteria. A list of criteria documents related to Civil
1.2
Engineering is presented in the front of this handbook. See MIL-HDBK-1025/1,
Piers and Wharves for criteria on rail supports (deck fittings), wheel loads,
and trackage location and arrangement on waterfront structures (deck structure
design). See DM-38.01, Weight Handling Equipment for design details for
weight and line handling equipment. All documents referenced in this handbook
are listed in the References section located at the end of this handbook.
Unless specially stated otherwise, use the current editions of all referenced
documents.
Policy. Portal crane trackage should be separate from railroad
1.3
trackage, except as stated in Chapter 1 of this handbook, and in NAVFAC MIL-
HDBK-1025/1, Piers and Wharves.
Types of Portal Crane Trackage. There are two types of portal
1.4
crane trackage systems in use in the Naval Shore Establishment.
Two-Rail System. The cranes for this system are equipped with
1.4.1
double-flanged wheels. This is the preferred track system.
Four-Rail System. This system consists of two standard (RR) gage
1.4.2
tracks. The cranes for this system are equipped with single-flanged wheels.
This system is the most expensive and interferes with railroad service.
